Air Fryer Mashed Potato Wontons: Crispy, Delicious Recipe!

  • Total Time: 60 minutes
  • Yield: 50 wontons 1x

Description

Crispy, golden brown wontons filled with creamy mashed potatoes, air-fried to perfection! A fun and delicious appetizer or snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs Russet potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 1/2 cup milk (or cream for extra richness)
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 50 wonton wrappers
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
  • Vegetable oil spray
  • Sour cream
  • Sweet chili sauce
  • Soy sauce
  • Ranch dressing

Instructions

  1. Boil the Potatoes: Place the peeled and quartered potatoes in a large pot. Cover them with cold water, ensuring the water level is about an inch above the potatoes. Add a pinch of salt to the water. Bring the pot to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and let the potatoes simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until they are fork-tender. You should be able to easily pierce them with a fork without much resistance.
  2. Drain the Potatoes: Carefully drain the potatoes in a colander. Make sure to get rid of all the water, as excess water will make your mashed potatoes watery and less flavorful.
  3. Return to the Pot: Return the drained potatoes to the empty pot. This will help them steam dry a bit and prevent them from becoming soggy.
  4. Mash the Potatoes: Use a potato masher or an electric mixer to mash the potatoes. If using a masher, work in a circular motion, pressing down firmly to break up the potatoes. If using an electric mixer, start on low speed to avoid splattering and gradually increase the speed until the potatoes are smooth. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the potatoes gluey.
  5. Add Milk and Butter: While the potatoes are still warm, add the milk (or cream) and butter. Start with the specified amounts and adjust to your liking. For richer, creamier mashed potatoes, add more butter or cream.
  6. Season the Potatoes: Add the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Taste and adjust the seasonings as needed. I like a generous pinch of salt and pepper, but you can customize it to your preference.
  7. Mix Well: Mix everything together until the potatoes are smooth, creamy, and well-seasoned. Set aside to cool slightly before filling the wontons. This will prevent the wonton wrappers from becoming soggy.
  8. Prepare the Egg Wash: In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water. This will act as a glue to seal the wonton wrappers.
  9. Lay Out the Wonton Wrappers: Place a few wonton wrappers on a clean, dry surface. Keep the remaining wrappers covered with a damp paper towel to prevent them from drying out.
  10. Fill the Wonton Wrappers: Place about 1 teaspoon of the mashed potato mixture in the center of each wonton wrapper. Be careful not to overfill them, as this will make them difficult to seal.
  11. Seal the Wontons: Dip your finger into the egg wash and lightly moisten the edges of the wonton wrapper. Fold the wrapper in half diagonally to form a triangle. Press the edges firmly to seal, making sure to squeeze out any air pockets. You want a tight seal to prevent the filling from leaking out during air frying.
  12. Repeat: Repeat steps 9-11 until all the mashed potato mixture is used or you run out of wonton wrappers.
  13. Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). This ensures that the wontons cook evenly and become crispy.
  14. Prepare the Wontons for Air Frying: Lightly spray the air fryer basket with vegetable oil spray. This will prevent the wontons from sticking.
  15. Arrange the Wontons: Place the wontons in the air fryer basket in a single layer, making sure they are not touching. You may need to cook them in batches, depending on the size of your air fryer. Overcrowding the basket will prevent the wontons from crisping up properly.
  16. Spray with Oil: Lightly spray the wontons with vegetable oil spray. This will help them brown evenly.
  17. Air Fry: Air fry for 6-8 minutes, or until the wontons are golden brown and crispy. Flip them halfway through the cooking time to ensure even browning. Keep a close eye on them, as air fryers can vary in temperature and cooking time.
  18. Remove and Cool: Carefully remove the wontons from the air fryer and place them on a wire rack to cool slightly. This will help them stay crispy.
  19. Serve: Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

  • Add Cheese: Mix shredded cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, or Parmesan cheese into the mashed potato mixture for extra flavor.
  • Spice it Up: Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a dash of hot sauce to the mashed potato mixture for a spicy kick.
  • Use Different Fillings: Experiment with other fillings, such as cream cheese and chives, or even leftover pulled pork or shredded chicken.
  • Bake Instead of Air Frying: If you don’t have an air fryer, you can bake the wontons in the oven at 400°F (200°C) for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
  • Make Ahead: You can assemble the wontons ahead of time and store them in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Just make sure to keep them covered to prevent them from drying out. Air fry them just before serving.
  • Dipping Sauce Suggestions: Sour Cream, Sweet Chili Sauce, Soy Sauce, Ranch Dressing.
