  • Author: Maria
  • Total Time: 55 minutes
  • Yield: 12 pop-tarts 1x

Description

Savory breakfast pop-tarts filled with cheese and breakfast sausage, these flaky pastries are perfect for a quick and delicious morning meal. Customize the filling with your favorite ingredients and enjoy them warm or at room temperature, paired with your favorite condiment.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
  • 68 tablespoons ice water
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or your favorite)
  • 1 cup cooked breakfast sausage, crumbled (or bacon, if you prefer)
  • 2 large eggs, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional: hot sauce or your favorite condiment for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar. Whisk them together until they are well mixed.
  2. Add the chilled, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. You want to see small pea-sized pieces of butter throughout the mixture.
  3. Gradually add the ice water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing gently with a fork after each addition. You want the dough to come together without being sticky. Stop adding water once the dough holds together when pressed.
  4. Once the dough is formed, divide it into two equal parts. Shape each part into a disk, wrap them in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  5. In a medium bowl, combine the shredded cheese, crumbled breakfast sausage, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Mix everything together until well combined.
  6. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  7. Take one disk of dough out of the refrigerator and place it on a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough out to about 1/8-inch thickness.
  8. Cut the rolled-out dough into rectangles, about 3×5 inches in size. Repeat with the second disk of dough.
  9. Take one rectangle of dough and place a generous tablespoon of the filling mixture in the center. Brush the edges of the dough rectangle with the beaten egg.
  10. Place another rectangle of dough over the filled rectangle, pressing down gently around the edges to seal. Crimp the edges with a fork.
  11. Repeat this process with the remaining rectangles and filling until all pop-tarts are assembled.
  12. Place the assembled pop-tarts on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between each one. Brush the tops with the remaining beaten egg.
  13. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and flaky. Let cool slightly before serving.
