Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
- 6–8 tablespoons ice water
- 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or your favorite)
- 1 cup cooked breakfast sausage, crumbled (or bacon, if you prefer)
- 2 large eggs, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- Optional: hot sauce or your favorite condiment for serving
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar. Whisk them together until they are well mixed.
- Add the chilled, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. You want to see small pea-sized pieces of butter throughout the mixture.
- Gradually add the ice water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing gently with a fork after each addition. You want the dough to come together without being sticky. Stop adding water once the dough holds together when pressed.
- Once the dough is formed, divide it into two equal parts. Shape each part into a disk, wrap them in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- In a medium bowl, combine the shredded cheese, crumbled breakfast sausage, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Mix everything together until well combined.
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Take one disk of dough out of the refrigerator and place it on a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough out to about 1/8-inch thickness.
- Cut the rolled-out dough into rectangles, about 3×5 inches in size. Repeat with the second disk of dough.
- Take one rectangle of dough and place a generous tablespoon of the filling mixture in the center. Brush the edges of the dough rectangle with the beaten egg.
- Place another rectangle of dough over the filled rectangle, pressing down gently around the edges to seal. Crimp the edges with a fork.
- Repeat this process with the remaining rectangles and filling until all pop-tarts are assembled.
- Place the assembled pop-tarts on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between each one. Brush the tops with the remaining beaten egg.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and flaky. Let cool slightly before serving.
