- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 pound Italian sausage
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (15 ounces) pizza sauce
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup sliced pepperoni
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 package (2.5 pounds) refrigerated pizza dough
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Optional toppings: sliced olives, diced bell peppers, mushrooms
Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef and Italian sausage. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula as it cooks (about 5-7 minutes).
- Drain any excess fat from the skillet.
- Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes until the onion is translucent and fragrant.
- Stir in the pizza sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Let this simmer for about 5 minutes.
- Remove from heat and fold in the sliced pepperoni and half of the mozzarella and cheddar cheese.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- On a floured surface, roll out one package of pizza dough into a large circle to fit a 9-inch pie dish.
- Transfer the rolled-out dough into the pie dish, pressing it gently against the bottom and sides.
- Roll out the second package of pizza dough for the top crust and set aside.
- Spoon the meat and cheese filling into the prepared pie crust, spreading it evenly.
- Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella and cheddar cheese on top of the filling.
- Place the second rolled-out pizza dough over the top of the filling and seal the edges.
- Cut a few slits in the top crust for steam to escape.
- Brush the top crust with the beaten egg.
- Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.
- Carefully remove the pie from the oven and let it cool slightly before slicing.
