  • 1 pound Italian sausage
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 ounces) pizza sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup sliced pepperoni
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 package (2.5 pounds) refrigerated pizza dough
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Optional toppings: sliced olives, diced bell peppers, mushrooms

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef and Italian sausage. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula as it cooks (about 5-7 minutes).
  2. Drain any excess fat from the skillet.
  3. Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes until the onion is translucent and fragrant.
  4. Stir in the pizza sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Let this simmer for about 5 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and fold in the sliced pepperoni and half of the mozzarella and cheddar cheese.
  6. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  7. On a floured surface, roll out one package of pizza dough into a large circle to fit a 9-inch pie dish.
  8. Transfer the rolled-out dough into the pie dish, pressing it gently against the bottom and sides.
  9. Roll out the second package of pizza dough for the top crust and set aside.
  10. Spoon the meat and cheese filling into the prepared pie crust, spreading it evenly.
  11. Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella and cheddar cheese on top of the filling.
  12. Place the second rolled-out pizza dough over the top of the filling and seal the edges.
  13. Cut a few slits in the top crust for steam to escape.
  14. Brush the top crust with the beaten egg.
  15. Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.
  16. Carefully remove the pie from the oven and let it cool slightly before slicing.
