Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large croissants, preferably day-old
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup fresh berries (such as blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional)
  • Powdered sugar, for serving
  • Maple syrup, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Slice the croissants in half lengthwise and cut each half into bite-sized pieces. Place them in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Wash and dry the berries, slicing strawberries if using, and set aside.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs until frothy.
  5. Add the whole milk and heavy cream to the eggs, whisking until blended.
  6. Mix in the granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt, whisking until fully incorporated.
  7. Pour the custard mixture over the croissant pieces and gently fold to coat.
  8. If using, fold in the chocolate chips.
  9. Add the fresh berries and gently fold them into the mixture.
  10. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and pour the croissant mixture into it, spreading evenly.
  11. Cover the dish with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight.
  12. The next morning, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and let the casserole sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes.
  13. Uncover the casserole and bake for 45-55 minutes, or until golden brown and set. Check for doneness with a knife.
  14. If the top browns too quickly, cover loosely with aluminum foil during the last 15 minutes of baking.
  15. Serve warm, dusted with powdered sugar and drizzled with maple syrup.

Notes

  • For best results, use day-old croissants as they hold their shape better.
