- 6 large croissants, preferably day-old
- 6 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup fresh berries (such as blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries)
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional)
- Powdered sugar, for serving
- Maple syrup, for serving
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Slice the croissants in half lengthwise and cut each half into bite-sized pieces. Place them in a large mixing bowl.
- Wash and dry the berries, slicing strawberries if using, and set aside.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs until frothy.
- Add the whole milk and heavy cream to the eggs, whisking until blended.
- Mix in the granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt, whisking until fully incorporated.
- Pour the custard mixture over the croissant pieces and gently fold to coat.
- If using, fold in the chocolate chips.
- Add the fresh berries and gently fold them into the mixture.
- Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and pour the croissant mixture into it, spreading evenly.
- Cover the dish with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight.
- The next morning, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and let the casserole sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes.
- Uncover the casserole and bake for 45-55 minutes, or until golden brown and set. Check for doneness with a knife.
- If the top browns too quickly, cover loosely with aluminum foil during the last 15 minutes of baking.
- Serve warm, dusted with powdered sugar and drizzled with maple syrup.
