Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf of French bread (about 1 pound), cut into 1-inch thick slices
- 6 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- Fresh berries (optional, for serving)
- Powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)
Instructions
- Start by gathering all your ingredients on the counter.
- In a large mixing bowl, crack the 6 large eggs. Whisk them until they are well beaten and frothy.
- Add the 2 cups of whole milk and 1 cup of heavy cream to the eggs. Whisk until everything is combined.
- Add in the 1 cup of granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Whisk again until the mixture is smooth and the sugar is dissolved.
- Set the batter aside for a moment while you prepare the bread.
- Take your loaf of French bread and slice it into 1-inch thick slices.
- In a large baking dish, arrange the slices of bread in a single layer.
- Pour the prepared batter evenly over the bread slices. Use a spatula to gently press the bread down into the custard.
- Cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and place it in the refrigerator to chill for at least 8 hours, or overnight.
- When you’re ready to bake the French toast, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a small bowl, combine the 1/2 cup of packed brown sugar and 1/4 cup of melted unsalted butter. Mix until it forms a crumbly mixture.
- Remove the baking dish from the refrigerator and uncover it. Sprinkle the brown sugar mixture evenly over the top of the soaked bread slices.
- Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 45-50 minutes.
- To check for doneness, insert a knife into the center of the French toast. If it comes out clean, it’s ready.
- Once baked, remove the dish from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes.
- To serve, cut the French toast into squares or rectangles.
- If you like, dust the top with powdered sugar for an extra touch of sweetness.
- Serve with fresh berries on the side.
- Drizzle some maple syrup over the top just before serving.
- Enjoy your delicious Overnight Crème Brûlée French Toast with family!
Notes
