Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of French bread (about 1 pound), cut into 1-inch thick slices
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • Fresh berries (optional, for serving)
  • Powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Start by gathering all your ingredients on the counter.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, crack the 6 large eggs. Whisk them until they are well beaten and frothy.
  3. Add the 2 cups of whole milk and 1 cup of heavy cream to the eggs. Whisk until everything is combined.
  4. Add in the 1 cup of granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Whisk again until the mixture is smooth and the sugar is dissolved.
  5. Set the batter aside for a moment while you prepare the bread.
  6. Take your loaf of French bread and slice it into 1-inch thick slices.
  7. In a large baking dish, arrange the slices of bread in a single layer.
  8. Pour the prepared batter evenly over the bread slices. Use a spatula to gently press the bread down into the custard.
  9. Cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and place it in the refrigerator to chill for at least 8 hours, or overnight.
  10. When you’re ready to bake the French toast, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  11. In a small bowl, combine the 1/2 cup of packed brown sugar and 1/4 cup of melted unsalted butter. Mix until it forms a crumbly mixture.
  12. Remove the baking dish from the refrigerator and uncover it. Sprinkle the brown sugar mixture evenly over the top of the soaked bread slices.
  13. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 45-50 minutes.
  14. To check for doneness, insert a knife into the center of the French toast. If it comes out clean, it’s ready.
  15. Once baked, remove the dish from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes.
  16. To serve, cut the French toast into squares or rectangles.
  17. If you like, dust the top with powdered sugar for an extra touch of sweetness.
  18. Serve with fresh berries on the side.
  19. Drizzle some maple syrup over the top just before serving.
  20. Enjoy your delicious Overnight Crème Brûlée French Toast with family!

Notes

  • For best results, allow the bread to soak overnight to fully absorb the custard.
  • Feel free to customize the toppings with your favorite fruits or syrups.
