Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- ½ cup warm milk (110°F or 43°C)
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- ½ teaspoon salt
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- ¼ cup milk (for glaze)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Once the yeast mixture is frothy, add it to the egg mixture and stir until combined.
- In another bowl, mix the flour and salt together. Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring with a wooden spoon or spatula until a dough begins to form.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Shape the dough into a ball, place it in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Once risen, punch down the dough and transfer it back to a floured surface.
- Roll out the dough to about ½ inch thickness and cut out donuts using a donut cutter or two round cookie cutters.
- Place the cut donuts on a floured baking sheet, cover, and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the donuts for 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown.
- Remove the donuts from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract for the glaze until smooth.
- Dip the tops of each warm donut into the glaze and place them on a wire rack to set. Add sprinkles if desired.
Notes
- Make sure the milk is warm but not too hot, as high temperatures can kill the yeast.
- For a flavored glaze, consider adding cocoa powder for chocolate glaze or different extracts like almond or lemon.
- Store any leftover donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
